Position: Mechanic I (FT)
Department: Fleet Maintenance
Starting Salary: $18.96/hour

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment. Entry-level position intended for individuals beginning a career in fleet and heavy equipment maintenance.
Major Duties:
· Perform engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, and transmission repairs on county vehicles and heavy equipment.
· Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance, including inspection and testing of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
· Perform preventive maintenance on gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, and mowing tractors.
· Perform corrective maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment, including transmission, hydraulic, electrical, paint and body, and varying levels of engine repair.
· Perform routine maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, and heating and air conditioning repairs.
· Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using appropriate diagnostic tools.
· Perform emergency repairs and troubleshoot equipment failures at job sites and the landfill.
· Weld and fabricate parts as required.
· Maintain the fleet maintenance shop, tools, and equipment in a safe and organized manner.
· Repair and paint damaged vehicle and equipment components as needed.
· Participate in on-call and after-hours duties, including response during inclement weather events, emergencies, and a rotational on-call schedule.
· Perform other related duties as required for efficient departmental operations as assigned.
· Performs basic repairs and preventive maintenance under direct supervision.
· Assists senior mechanics with complex diagnostics and repairs.
· Learns proper use of diagnostic equipment, tools, and safety procedures.
· Completes assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and manufacturer specifications.
· Demonstrates willingness to learn new systems, equipment, and repair techniques.
· May be required to obtain ASE Entry-Level Certifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
· One to two years of experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or has had a similar position.
· Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
· Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must pass a Background/Reference Check and Pre-Employment Drug Screenings prior to the start of employment.
